National Teacher’s Day is a day to celebrate and appreciate the hard
work and dedication of teachers around the world. It is a time to recognize
the impact that teachers have on our lives, both past and present. Teachers
play a vital role in shaping our minds and helping us reach our full
potential. They are the ones who introduce us to new concepts, challenge us to
think critically, and help us develop our skills and talents. They are also
there to support us when we are struggling, and to celebrate our successes
with us.
National Teacher’s Day in the United
States
In the United States,
National Teacher’s Day is celebrated annually on the first Tuesday of May.
This year, National Teacher’s Day will be celebrated on May 7, 2023
2024.
History of National
Teacher’s Day
The idea for a
National Teacher’s Day was first proposed in 1944 by Mattie Whyte Woodridge, a
teacher from Arkansas. Woodridge believed that teachers deserved a special day
to be honored for their contributions to society. She wrote letters to
Congress and educational leaders, and she eventually convinced the National
Education Association (NEA) to support her
cause.
In 1980, President Jimmy Carter
signed a proclamation declaring March 7th as National Teacher’s Day. However,
the NEA continued to observe the holiday in May. In 1985, the NEA’s
Representative Assembly voted to change the date of National Teacher’s Day to
the first Tuesday of May. This change was made in order to align National
Teacher’s Day with Teacher Appreciation Week.
