There are two main ways to say “how much” in Thai, depending on the context.
เท่าไร (tao rai) is the most common way to say “how much” in Thai. It can be used to ask about the price of anything, from food and drinks to clothing and souvenirs. For example, you could say “เท่าไรคะ” (tao rai ka) to ask how much a dish of pad thai costs.
กี่บาท (gì baht) is used specifically to ask about the price of something in Thai baht, the currency of Thailand. For example, you could say “กี่บาทคะ” (gì baht ka) to ask how much a taxi ride costs.
Here are some additional ways to use “เท่าไร” and “กี่บาท” in a sentence:
- ราคาเท่าไรคะ? (Raka tao rai ka?) – How much does it cost?
- เสื้อตัวนี้เท่าไรคะ? (Seuua tuaw nee tao rai ka?) – How much is this shirt?
- ค่ารถเท่าไรคะ? (Ka rot tao rai ka?) – How much is the taxi fare?
- กี่บาทคะ? (Gì baht ka?) – How much is it in baht?
- น้ำผลไม้กี่บาทคะ? (Nam phalamai gì baht ka?) – How much is a glass of juice?
It is also polite to add the particle “คะ” (ka) or “ครับ” (khrab) to the end of your sentence when you are asking a question. “คะ” is used by women, and “ครับ” is used by men.
